What A Difference A Year Makes

For the third year in a row, projected life expectancy in the U.S. has decreased, according to the CDC’s National Center for Health Statistics. The study goes into great detail, but the message is clear: When measured against other civilized countries, we have some work to do.

One year ago, we kicked off our Taking On Healthy campaign. We had one goal in mind: to provide a source of information and inspiration to help our members and our community live longer, healthier lives. We wanted to approach it from the various dimensions of health: physical, mental and emotional.

We had one goal in mind: to provide a source of information and inspiration to help our members and our community live longer, healthier lives.

We realized we needed something more than just another workout or sunscreen article. If we were going to make a difference, we needed to take a holistic approach and provide real-world, actionable information. We searched for topics that you might not have heard of, like aquafaba and sound baths. We suggested ways for you to unplug and reconnect with yourself, your friends and your family. We provided healthy, delicious recipes, like our lemony chicken soup, which was a smash hit with our readers, and we talked about how to manage toxic relationships. We even showed you how to build a vertical garden and featured a first-person interview on the truth behind colonoscopies.

We knew we needed more than just another sunscreen article. We wanted to approach it from various dimensions of health: physical, mental and emotional.

As you can see, our topics are wide-ranging because we are a community of diverse individuals with different needs and interests. Health Plan of Nevada provides health insurance plans to fit many lifestyles and stages of life. We cover large businesses, small businesses and working owners. We offer plans for individuals as well as a Medicaid plan. But our responsibility to our community doesn’t stop there. We want our community to be healthy and happy and to live rich, full lives. And as long as we focus on health from a holistic point of view, we hope we can help make a difference for everyone.

In our first year, thousands of Nevadans visited TakingOnHealthy.com. We posted more than 70 original-content blogs, videos and recipes. Over 18,000 people read “Five Ways to Unplug and Reconnect,” with 11,000 reading “How I Tricked My Kids Into Being Active”—both articles full of real-world tips and tricks you can use. We’ve featured our own Neil Boyce, RN, BSN, CCM and associate director at Health Plan of Nevada, on morning TV shows talking about everything from healthy and simple marinara sauce to how to make peanut butter chickpea blondies. Our own medical director, Dr. Rutu Ezhuthachan, stopped by Fox 5’s MORE show to discuss her take on kids’ health and HPN’s Taking On Healthy campaign.
